Irina Werning

I am featuring two bodies of work, one today by Irina Werning, and one tomorrow by Gabriela Herman--both have been bouncing around on a myriad of blogs, but still wanted to share them on Lenscratch..

Irina Werning has done something we'd all like to do. She has mined the photo albums of friends and family in Buenos Aires, and brought childhood photographs to life. Her series, Back to the Future, is a fascinating look at aging, and while her subjects morph and change into adults, they stay very much the same. She had done an amazing job of replicating the original childhood outfit and location.

Born in Buenos Aires, Irina earned an BA Economics, Universidad de San Andres, Buenos Aires, an BA Economics, Universidad de San Andres, Buenos Aires, and an MA Photographic Journalism, Westminster University, London. In 2006, she won the Ian Parry Scholarship and Gordon Foundation Grant.

Before you praise this project, you may want to have a look at this: http://www.zefrank.com/youngmenowme/ It's an ongoing project that started a couple of years ago. Makes me wonder how original Irina's project really is.

I was just looking at these pictures yesterday! They are so good.

Thanks Jarek--I am assuming she may not been aware of this project, and in my opinion was actually more successful in the adult replication, but truly, there doesn't seem to be much that is totally original anywhere these days.

I love this and think it is so clever .. the detail in this is amazing, right down to the lighting .. it really made me smile too :)

Fantastic work. The reproductions are phenomenal in their detail--posing is particularly nice, as that's typically a tough one to crack.
