I'm a sucker for self portraits...not my own, but other people's and Gariela Herman's are quite engaging. All of her work is imbued with a feeling of joy, a feeling of why-not, and a sense that she is happily exploring the world around her. She's been photographing her family and I look forward to a project on that subject in the future.
Gabriela Herman hails from Newton, Massachusetts, but has spent her twenty-seven years in a variety of zip codes from France to Mexico to Brazil. She returned last year from five years residing abroad in São Paulo. Growing up with dual American/Brazilian citizenship and Portuguese spoken at home, she decided it was only logical to study abroad in Brazil for a semester in college (Wesleyan University). That semester turned into a year which then turned into five. While living there she had the opportunity to work for several acclaimed photographers. She has been featured in the Humble Arts Foundation Group Show, Projekt 30’s I(pronoun) show, Trucemag, and was nominated this year for a New York Photo Award. She is currently freelancing in New York City.
