Charlie Grosso

Charlie Grosso, is a Chinese American female photographer, who happens to have a male Italian name. Born in Taipaei, Taiwan, Charlie moved to Los Angeles when she was 11. After pursuing a BA at USC in Theater Design, she recieved an MFA at Boston University and Suny Purchase. Apprenticing with photographers such as Jay Maisel, Charlie began her own commercial photography career and now has a roster of clients including Variety, Wine Spectator, Reed Elsevier, Arts District Citizen, Z. Cavericci, JammFactory, Barco Uniforms, Zinc and University of Southern California.

In 2005, Charlie shifted her focus, and though continuing her commercial business, started shooting more fine art and documentary work. Most of this energy has been placed on a single body of work, Wok the Dog, a series that she hope will create a larger cultural dialogue in efforts to understand the effects of industrialization and our disconnect with the source of our meals. As Americans, the process that our food takes from slaughter to table is rarely considered.

These are not easy images to look at, but they need to be seen. Charlie is currently in South America, adding to the series. Her work has been well celebrated with a variety of awards and press, and was recently featured on the radio program, Good Food, and interviewed by Evan Kleiman.
